The answer to this questions depends on what you will be doing at the gym. Are you going to be strength training (squats, deadlifts, presses, cleans, etc)? Are you taking an aerobics class (this includes all classes that are held in the group training room and called strength training or body pump or strength/muscle something… those are all actually aerobics classes)? Are you going to take a spin class? Are you doing crossfit/hiit training?
Each type of training has a particular shoe that should be worn for the best workout and safety. If you are doing heavy squats and deadlifts, you should buy a solid powerlifting shoe to make sure your feet are well supported on a solid surface. If you are running on a treadmill, elliptical or an aerobics class, then a running shoe would be best. If you are going to take a spin class, the best shoe to get would be cycling shoes that have clips on the bottom that attach to the spin bicycle pedals. So, choose your footwear based on the exercise that you will be doing.
Running/aerobics shoes are the most popular shoe type on the market. Choose from any name brand, and you should be fine.
As for strength training, I’d recommend the Adidas Adipower Weightlift Shoes for men and the Adidas Powerlift Trainer for women. Check them out.
